A Conversation With:

DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ

By Michael Haddad

Last November DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ released “Charmed” a three hour epic and the final album in a pentology. We exchanged emails over the last week.

Michael Haddad: How would you describe your music to someone who hasn’t heard your music before?
DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ: Disco house plunderphonic retro electron lo-fi beats? :p It's a mess of all the sounds I've ever liked that I can get away with throwing into the same song, haha!

MH: Could you describe your creative process a bit?
DJSTTDJ: It depends on the track, sometimes a sample will guide the way, other times a bassline or rhythmic idea might be the inspiration kinda just keep embellishing the sound until it makes me dance!

MH: How did you begin making music?
DJSTTDJ: I always wanted to make music since I was a kid, I just originally threw up a DAW and started putting samples together for fun, the process has developed a bit over the years but the concept is still the same ;)

MH: What other artistic mediums serve as inspiration for your music?
DJSTTDJ: Movies are a big inspiration, especially underrated dramas or romantic movies that are particularly moving but slip under the radar.

MH: Is there an album that you think everyone should listen to at least once in their life?
DJSTTDJ: The Avalanches’ Since I Left You, but everyone should listen to it at least once every day for the rest of their life (like I do, haha!)

MH: What’s next for you?
DJSTTDJ: Here's the story straight from the album press release: After working herself into a non-mortal magical obliteration, she passed 'twix the planes of mortal and magic, her soul carried away from her body, spirit to The Other Realm. As her close friends and family mourn her demise, they each ask themselves what they learned from her existence, their favorite qualities of hers and, most importantly... will she rise again?
